Smart lock compatibility with Spanish doors: the complete buying guide
Three weeks ago we installed a Nuki on a puerta blindada in El Centro, Malaga. The owner had already ordered two smart locks that did not fit because he did not know his security door was 72mm thick. Spanish doors differ from what you are used to back home in three ways: the cylinder, the thickness, and the locking mechanism. Measure first, order second.

Spanish door types: what you need to know
Spanish properties have three common door types, each with its own smart lock compatibility requirements:
1. Standard wooden interior door with Euro cylinder
This is the most common door in apartments and townhouses on the Costa del Sol. The door uses a standard European profile cylinder (also called Euro cylinder), the most common cylinder type in Europe. The vast majority of smart locks are designed for this cylinder type. If your property has this type, you are in luck: virtually any smart lock on the market will fit.2. Security door (puerta blindada / puerta acorazada)
Many Spanish properties have a reinforced security door as their front door. There are two variants: • Puerta blindada (armoured door): a wooden door with a steel core. Typically uses a standard Euro cylinder, but the door is thicker (60-80mm vs. the standard 40-50mm). Most smart locks fit, but you may need an extended mounting plate. • Puerta acorazada (hardened door): a fully steel door with extra security. Often uses a security cylinder with anti-bumping and anti-picking protection. Smart lock compatibility depends on the cylinder type.3. Multi-point lock (cerradura multipunto)
Some older Spanish properties and villas have a multi-point locking system: a mechanism where the key operates multiple locking points simultaneously (top, middle, and bottom of the door). This type is harder to combine with a smart lock because the lock must replicate the full turning motion of the key. Nuki supports multi-point locks provided the cylinder is a standard Euro profile.Compatible smart lock brands
Not every smart lock fits every Spanish door. Here is an overview of the most popular brands and their compatibility:
| Brand / Model | Cylinder type | Security door | Multi-point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 | Euro cylinder | Yes (with extended plate) | Yes |
| Yale Linus | Euro cylinder | Yes (limited) | Limited |
| August Wi-Fi | US deadbolt | No | No |
| Tedee GO | Euro cylinder | Yes | Yes |
Nuki: the best choice for Spain
For most Spanish properties, Nuki is the safest choice. The device is specifically designed for Euro cylinders, supports multi-point locks, and offers an extended mounting plate for thick security doors. The Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 combines WiFi and Bluetooth and has the most powerful API for rental automation integration. August is primarily designed for American deadbolts and is therefore not suitable for most Spanish properties.Measurement guide: check your cylinder before buying
Before buying a smart lock, measure three things:
- Cylinder type - remove your current cylinder by unscrewing the fixing screw on the side of the lock. If the cylinder has an elongated oval profile with a flat bottom, it is a Euro profile cylinder. This is the type supported by Nuki, Yale, and Tedee.
- Cylinder length - measure the distance from the centre of the fixing screw hole to each side. A standard Euro cylinder is 30/30mm (60mm total). Security doors often have 35/35mm or even 40/40mm cylinders. Note the measurement on the inside (where the smart lock will be).
- Door thickness - measure the thickness of your door including the frame and lock plate. Standard doors are 40-50mm thick. Security doors can be 60-80mm thick. Nuki offers an extended mounting plate for doors up to 80mm.
Common measurement mistakes
• Measure from the centre of the screw hole, not the edge of the cylinder • Measure both sides: the inner and outer measurements are often not equal • If in doubt: send us a photo of your door and lock. Our technician can assess compatibility from photos.WiFi vs Bluetooth: which connectivity do you choose?
Smart locks communicate via WiFi, Bluetooth, or a combination. The choice has a direct impact on your rental experience:
WiFi
• Advantage: remote control from anywhere in the world. You can lock, unlock, and check the status via an app. • Disadvantage: higher energy consumption, resulting in faster battery drain. Dependent on a stable WiFi connection. • Recommended for: owners who manage remotely (most Costa del Sol vacation rental owners)Bluetooth
• Advantage: lower energy consumption, longer battery life. Works even when WiFi is down. • Disadvantage: no remote control. You must be physically near the door (or a guest with a smartphone). • Recommended for: backup connectivity alongside WiFi The Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 offers both: WiFi for daily remote management and Bluetooth as a backup. This makes it ideal for vacation rental automation.Battery management in the Spanish climate
The Costa del Sol has hot, dry summers with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. This affects your smart lock's battery life.
Impact of heat on battery life
Smart locks typically use 4x AA batteries. At normal temperatures (15-25 degrees), these last 4-6 months with average use of 8-10 lock/unlock cycles per day. During summer months on the Costa del Sol, when outdoor temperatures exceed 40 degrees, battery life can decrease by 20-30%. Practical tips for battery management: • Use lithium batteries - these perform better at high temperatures than alkaline batteries • Check battery status regularly - all smart locks send a notification at low battery. Set your alerts to at least 20% remaining. • Keep spare batteries at the property - not in direct sunlight or near the door • Replace batteries before peak season - start summer with fresh batteries to prevent outages during the busiest rental period • Insulate your front door - if your door faces direct sunlight, consider an awning or shade to reduce temperature With KeyLessCosta, we monitor your smart lock's battery status remotely and proactively notify you when replacement is needed.Frequently asked questions
- Will a smart lock fit my Spanish security door?
- In most cases, yes. The majority of Spanish security doors (puertas blindadas) use Euro profile cylinders compatible with Nuki. For thicker doors, an extended mounting plate is available. Send us a photo of your door for a free compatibility check.
- How do I know what cylinder type I have?
- Remove the cylinder by unscrewing the screw on the side of the lock. A Euro profile cylinder has an elongated oval shape with a flat bottom. This is the most common type in Spain.
- Can I install a smart lock myself?
- Yes, most retrofit smart locks (like Nuki) are designed for self-installation in 15-20 minutes. But if you are unsure about compatibility or have a security door, we recommend professional installation. Our technician on the Costa del Sol handles this for you.
- How long do batteries last in summer?
- At normal summer temperatures (30-40 degrees), lithium batteries last 3-5 months. In extreme heat or heavy use, this may be shorter. Always start the summer season with fresh batteries.
- What if the WiFi in the property goes down?
- Guests can still enter via Bluetooth (if they have the Nuki app) or the physical keypad. Your physical key always works as an emergency backup.
- Is a smart lock secure for a vacation rental?
- Yes. Modern smart locks use AES-256 encryption and are certified to European safety standards. They are at least as secure as traditional locks and offer the added benefit of an activity log and time-limited access codes.
