MiDNI: how Spain's digital identity is changing vacation rental check-in
Last week we had a guest in Marbella check in digitally for the first time using only his smartphone instead of a physical passport. The technology behind it? MiDNI, Spain's official digital identity app. Since its launch in 2024 by the Policia Nacional, Spanish citizens can carry their DNI on their phone. For vacation rental owners, this opens the door to fully automated guest registration without physical documents. Below we explain what MiDNI is, how it integrates with SES Hospedajes, and what it means for your rental operations on the Costa del Sol.

What is MiDNI?
MiDNI stands for Mi Documento Nacional de Identidad - literally "my national identity document". It is an official app from the Policia Nacional that allows Spanish citizens to carry a digital copy of their DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) on their smartphone.
The app was launched in 2024 and uses NFC technology (Near Field Communication) to read the chip in the physical DNI document and store a cryptographically secured digital version. The result is a legally valid identity document that can be shown on a phone screen.
How does verification work?
Verification happens in two steps. First, the user holds their physical DNI against the phone's NFC reader to extract the chip data. Then the digital identity is stored in a secure enclave on the device, protected by biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition). Each verification generates a unique QR code with a limited validity period, making fraud practically impossible. Important: MiDNI is not a photo of your passport. It is a cryptographically signed digital identity issued and validated by the Spanish government. How MiDNI affects vacation rental check-in
Until now, vacation rental owners had to scan or copy a physical identity document at every check-in to comply with the SES Hospedajes registration requirement. MiDNI changes this fundamentally.
Instead of scanning a physical document, a guest with a Spanish DNI can verify their identity digitally via a QR code. The owner (or the automated check-in system) reads the QR code and receives the verified personal data directly, without manual entry.
Benefits for the check-in process
• Faster registration - no physical document needed at arrival • Fewer errors - data is transferred digitally instead of being typed manually • Remote verification - guests can confirm their identity before they arrive • Better data protection - no need to store physical copies of identity documents • Seamless SES integration - verified data can be sent directly to the SES Hospedajes system For owners who automate their vacation rental, MiDNI is a major step towards a fully contactless check-in experience.MiDNI for Spanish residents vs. foreign tourists
An important caveat: MiDNI is currently only available to holders of a Spanish DNI. This means the app works for Spanish citizens and for certain residents who hold a DNI.
| Guest type | MiDNI available? | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Spanish citizen (DNI) | Yes | Physical DNI |
| EU citizen with NIE | Expected 2025-2026 | Physical NIE or passport |
| EU citizen with eIDAS wallet | Expected 2026-2027 | Physical passport or national ID |
| Non-EU tourist | No | Physical passport (required) |
The European eIDAS wallet
The European Union is developing the European Digital Identity Wallet (eIDAS 2.0), a standardised digital identity that will be valid across all EU member states. When it becomes available (expected 2026-2027), EU citizens will be able to use a similar digital identification when checking into Spanish vacation rentals. Until then, non-Spanish EU citizens and non-EU tourists must continue using their physical documents for SES registration. What this means for SES Hospedajes compliance
The integration of MiDNI with the SES Hospedajes system brings concrete changes to guest registration:
Simplified data capture
In a traditional SES registration, you must manually enter the following data: full name, document number, document type, nationality, date of birth, place of birth, gender, address, and signature. With MiDNI, this data is transferred automatically and error-free from the verified digital identity.QR-based verification
The MiDNI verification process works via a QR code:- The guest opens the MiDNI app on their smartphone
- The app generates a QR code containing verified personal data
- The check-in system scans the QR code
- The verified data is automatically forwarded to SES Hospedajes
Potential reduction of mandatory fields
Spain's Ministry of the Interior is considering reducing the number of mandatory data fields for guests who identify themselves via MiDNI, since digital verification already provides a higher level of reliability than manual document inspection. This is not yet confirmed, but it could significantly reduce the registration burden for rental owners.Timeline and adoption roadmap
The rollout of MiDNI and related digital identity systems follows a phased schedule:
| Period | Milestone | Impact on rental owners |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | MiDNI launched for DNI holders | Spanish guests can check in digitally |
| 2025 | Expansion to NIE holders (expected) | Foreign residents in Spain gain access |
| 2026 | eIDAS 2.0 integration (expected) | EU citizens can use European digital ID |
| 2027+ | Full adoption and SES integration | Digital check-in becomes the standard |
What you should do now
• Make sure your SES registration is in order - MiDNI does not replace the SES system, it only simplifies data entry. Read our SES troubleshooting guide if you are stuck. • Invest in digital check-in automation - systems that already support online check-in are the easiest to upgrade for MiDNI verification • Keep both options available - physical document verification remains necessary for non-Spanish guests • Follow eIDAS developments - once the European digital wallet becomes available, you can extend digital check-in to all EU guests With KeyLessCosta, we prepare your check-in system for MiDNI integration so you are ready as soon as the technology becomes widely available.Frequently asked questions
- What exactly is MiDNI?
- MiDNI (Mi Documento Nacional de Identidad) is an official app from the Spanish Policia Nacional that lets you carry a digital version of your DNI on your smartphone. It is a legally valid identity document.
- Can my foreign guests use MiDNI?
- No, not at this time. MiDNI is only available to holders of a Spanish DNI. EU citizens must wait for the eIDAS wallet (expected 2026-2027). Non-EU tourists continue using their physical passport.
- Does MiDNI replace SES Hospedajes registration?
- No. MiDNI simplifies the data entry for SES, but the obligation to register guests through SES Hospedajes remains. You must still register guests within 24 hours of arrival.
- Is MiDNI secure for guest registration?
- Yes. MiDNI uses cryptographic security and biometric authentication. The QR codes have a limited validity period, making misuse of copied codes practically impossible.
- Do I need to update my check-in system for MiDNI?
- Not yet. Integration with vacation rental systems is being rolled out gradually. With KeyLessCosta, we monitor developments and update your system as soon as the MiDNI API becomes available for rental owners.
- What if the app does not work when the guest arrives?
- Always have a fallback ready. If MiDNI fails (dead battery, app outage), the guest must be able to show their physical DNI or passport. Digital verification is a complement, not a replacement for physical documents.
